Here we will be introducing and showcasing resources from WorkSafe Victoria’s WorkWell Program and Online Toolkit to help build your knowledge and skill set when it comes to creating safe and mentally healthy workplaces. The World Health Organization defines mental health as ‘a state of wellbeing where one realises their potential, copes with normal stresses, works productively and makes a contribution to the community’. It is estimated for every $1 spent to promote positive mental health in the workplace, the return on investment is $2.30 on average, and for small businesses it can be as high as $15 for every $1 spent (PwC Report 2014).
Key statistics from WorkSafe Victoria indicate the yearly cost of lost productivity caused by mental illness to the Australian economy is $12 billion. A mentally healthy workplace is good for business and has many benefits including increased productivity, positive culture and reduction of staff turnover.
